What is Emtone and how does it work?
Emtone delivers radiofrequency heat and mechanical pressure in the same application. The heat gently warms the tissue while the pressure works the area in a massage-like way.
Radiofrequency is a form of energy that produces controlled warming in the skin and the tissue beneath it. That warming is thought to influence collagen and connective tissue. Emtone combines this heating with mechanical pressure, so it adds a massage-like component to the general radiofrequency class.
The manufacturer states that the device has regulatory clearance for the temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. The scope of approval in your country and the device version should be confirmed separately with the treating centre and the manufacturer's documents.
How effective can it be for cellulite?
Published studies report a modest improvement in the appearance of cellulite, but the effect varies between people and complete disappearance should not be expected.
Cellulite is the orange-peel look that appears when fat under the skin pushes up between bands of connective tissue; genetics, hormones, tissue structure and lifestyle all play a part. Devices may soften the surface look but do not remove the underlying tendency.
Many studies are manufacturer-supported and small, so it would not be right to give the size of the effect as a firm figure. It should also be discussed from the start that the improved look may fade over time and maintenance sessions may be needed.
Is it used for skin laxity or fat reduction?
A limited tightening effect may be expected in mild laxity; Emtone should not be regarded as a method that removes fat cells or causes weight loss.
For marked sagging, excess skin or large fat deposits, devices of this kind often fall short and a surgical or other approach may be considered. Cooling-based methods for fat volume are a separate subject covered on their own page.
Which method suits which concern is decided at examination by considering skin thickness, the degree of laxity and your expectations together.
What is felt during and after a session?
Warmth and a pressing sensation are usual; temporary redness, tenderness and, rarely, bruising may occur. Serious side effects are uncommon but no treatment is free of risk.
The heat should stay at a tolerable level; with excessive burning or sharp pain the application needs to be stopped. After a session the area may be briefly red or tender to touch, and most people return to daily activities.
Findings such as a burn, blister, prolonged swelling or colour change are rare but should be taken seriously; rather than managing them yourself, contact the treating doctor or a dermatologist.
Who may not be suitable?
It is generally not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with active infection or a wound in the area, or with metal implants or electronic medical devices.
Suitability is assessed separately for people with a pacemaker or similar device, an implant or filler in the area, serious circulation or skin disease, or a feverish illness. Current medication, especially blood thinners and photosensitising drugs, should be shared with the doctor.
This list is not complete; personal suitability can only be determined at a face-to-face examination. Even when suitable, a different method or no treatment at all may be the better choice for some people.
What is discussed at the first consultation?
Your concern, medical history and expectations are heard, the area is examined, and suitability, alternatives and risks are explained.
The name or popularity of a device does not show that it suits you. How many sessions might be needed, how long a result may last and the fact that outcomes vary should be discussed openly.
You should not be rushed into a decision; you are entitled to written information and to ask questions. If the doctor thinks referral to another specialty is more appropriate, that will be said too.
Frequently asked questions
Is Emtone painful?
Warmth and pressure are usual; sensitivity differs from person to person. Your comfort level should be reported to the practitioner during the session.
How many sessions are needed?
A short course of sessions is usually planned; the number and spacing depend on the area and assessment. A firm number cannot be promised in advance.
Is the result permanent?
No, the effect is temporary and can change over time with lifestyle, weight change and ageing. Maintenance sessions may be needed.
Will Emtone make me lose weight?
No. The method does not cause weight loss and is not used for marked fat reduction.
Can it be done in pregnancy?
It is generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor about the period after birth.
