What is Allergan Botox?
Allergan Botox is a botulinum toxin type A medicine containing onabotulinumtoxinA. It is supplied as a powder that is reconstituted with sterile saline before use, and it temporarily reduces muscle contraction.
Botox is one of the botulinum toxin type A products that have been used in aesthetic medicine for many years, and its name has become shorthand for the treatment itself. That is why people often say “Botox” when they mean any toxin injection. In reality, there are other products from other manufacturers, each with its own active substance name, manufacturing process, formulation and dosing units.
To stay effective, the product must be kept refrigerated and, once reconstituted, used within the time set out in its official product information. The volume of saline used affects how many units go into each injection point, so preparing, storing and dosing the product is a medical task. Before treatment, you are welcome to ask to see the box, the batch number and the expiry date.
How does Allergan Botox differ from other botulinum toxins?
The basic mechanism is similar across type A toxins; the differences lie in manufacturing, the complexing proteins in the formulation and the dosing units. These differences do not make any product superior overall, but they do mean each is planned on its own terms.
OnabotulinumtoxinA is formulated with complexing proteins surrounding the toxin molecule. Other products may be structured differently; some, for example, are manufactured without complexing proteins. Scientific discussion continues about what these differences mean clinically for dose equivalence and spread in the tissues. From a patient’s point of view, what matters is that each product is used according to its own product information and the doctor’s experience.
Comparisons between products are often reduced to a single number, which can be misleading. How quickly the effect starts, how long it lasts and how it spreads depend on dose, dilution, injection technique and your own muscles as much as on the product. If you have been happy with a particular product before, mention it at your consultation; the final decision is made by the doctor after assessing you in person.
Why can Botox units not be compared one-to-one with other products?
Each manufacturer measures the biological activity of its product with its own test method. One unit of one product is therefore not equal to one unit of another, and doses cannot be converted directly.
Botulinum toxin doses are expressed in “units”, but a unit is not a universal measure. For each product, it is defined according to the manufacturer’s own standard assay. This is why product information states that units are not interchangeable with those of other botulinum toxin products. If you put the numbers from two different products side by side, seeing quite different figures is normal and means little on its own.
In practical terms, “how many units did I have?” only makes sense if you also know which product was used. When passing on details of a previous treatment, always include the product name. If a switch between products is being considered, the dose is worked out afresh based on the area, your muscle strength and how you responded before. That planning takes place at a face-to-face consultation.
Who may not be suitable for Allergan Botox?
Treatment is not given, or is postponed, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in neuromuscular conditions, when there is infection at the injection site and in anyone with a known allergy to the ingredients. These rules are similar for all botulinum toxin products.
In conditions such as myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome, the effect of the toxin may be stronger than expected, so treatment is generally avoided. Medicines that affect nerve-to-muscle transmission, including some antibiotics, can also change the assessment. The product contains human albumin as an excipient, so any known allergy to its components should be mentioned. If there is an active spot, cold sore or infection in the area, treatment is postponed.
Suitability depends on expectations as well as health. Deep lines that remain visible at rest, and volume loss, are not needs that toxin alone can meet. At your consultation, your medicines, previous treatments, any side effects you have had and any important events coming up are discussed. On that basis, the doctor decides whether this product is appropriate for you, or whether another approach would serve you better.
What does Allergan Botox treatment involve, and what are the risks?
The process and risks are similar to other botulinum toxins: small doses are injected into planned points with a fine needle; redness, bruising, headache and, less often, a drooping eyelid or brow can occur.
After assessment and consent, the skin is cleansed and the product is prepared and injected into the marked points. The effect usually begins within a few days and is fully visible at around two weeks. You are advised not to massage the area for the first few hours and to avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and hammams that day. At your review the result is assessed and, if needed, a small adjustment can be planned.
Most side effects are mild and short-lived: redness, tenderness, small bruises and headache are the most common. Less often, an eyelid may droop, the brows may sit unevenly or a neighbouring muscle may be affected, and these effects can last several weeks. Symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing require urgent medical attention. On the face, results typically last 3–4 months for most people.
Frequently asked questions
Is Allergan Botox the same thing as “botox”?
Botox is the brand name of a specific product containing onabotulinumtoxinA. In everyday speech, “botox” is used for all botulinum toxin treatments, so it is reasonable to ask which product will be used.
How can I tell the product is genuine?
Ask to see the box, batch number and expiry date. In Turkey, medicines are tracked with a data-matrix code, and the product should come through the authorised supply chain and be kept refrigerated.
Can I switch to Botox if I have had another product before?
Yes, but units do not convert one-to-one. The name of the previous product, the dose and how long it lasted are reviewed to build a new plan.
How long does Allergan Botox last?
On the face, results typically last 3–4 months for most people. Duration varies with dose, area, muscle strength and individual factors.
Is Botox also used for medical conditions?
Yes, onabotulinumtoxinA is also used for certain neurological and urological conditions. Which uses are licensed varies from country to country.
Are Vistabel and Botox Cosmetic the same as Allergan Botox?
In terms of active substance, yes: Vistabel and Botox Cosmetic contain onabotulinumtoxinA, like Allergan Botox, and in some countries they are sold under these separate trade names for aesthetic use. However, packaging, vial contents and licensed uses can differ from country to country. In Turkey, the trade name, batch number and data-matrix code of the product used on you can be checked on the box.
How is the number of Allergan Botox units decided?
The Allergan Botox dose is not one standard number; it depends on the area, muscle strength, the position of your brows and eyelids and how you responded to previous treatments. The product information gives dose recommendations for areas such as the frown lines, forehead and crow’s feet, which the doctor adapts to your face. Even the two sides of one face may need different doses.
Do the complexing proteins in Allergan Botox make resistance more likely?
Whether the complexing proteins in Allergan Botox significantly increase the risk of resistance is scientifically debated, and there is no consensus. At aesthetic doses, antibodies that weaken the effect of botulinum toxin are uncommon with every product. If resistance is a concern for you, keeping doses and treatment intervals measured matters more than the choice of product.
Can you be allergic to Allergan Botox?
An allergic reaction to Allergan Botox is very rare. It is not given if you have previously had hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin product or to its ingredients, which include human albumin as an excipient. If widespread itching, hives, swelling of the face or lips, or shortness of breath develops after treatment, seek urgent medical assessment without delay.
