What is cooling (ice) laser hair removal and what does the cooling do or not do?

Ice laser is a short name for technologies that cool the skin during laser hair removal; the laser itself is not ice. Cooling aims to protect the skin surface and ease discomfort. Effectiveness depends on wavelength, energy, hair and skin type. Cooling does not mean results on every skin and hair type; the doctor decides suitability.

What is ice laser hair removal, really?

It is the use of a system on a hair removal laser that cools the skin while the light is delivered. The light still targets melanin in the hair; cooling helps protect the skin surface.

Cooling can be done in different ways: a cold surface touching the skin, a stream of cold air or a cooling gas sprayed at the moment of the pulse. Which one is used depends on the device.

The name ice may suggest the treatment feels less hot, but it is a commercial label. The main mechanism of hair removal does not change.

Does cooling reduce discomfort?

Cooling may reduce the heat sensation and discomfort in many people but does not remove it completely. Pain threshold, area, hair density and settings all affect sensitivity.

In sensitive areas such as the upper lip, underarms and bikini line, discomfort may be higher. A local numbing cream may be planned for some people, but that is the doctor's decision.

Cooling may also help a more suitable energy to be chosen while protecting the skin. How far this applies depends on the device and skin type.

Is it effective on every skin and hair type?

No. Laser hair removal depends on hair colour, thickness and skin pigment. Cooling does not remove this basic limit; results may be limited on light, white or very fine hair.

On darker skin, choosing a suitable wavelength matters for safety. Cooling can help but does not replace choosing wavelength, pulse duration and energy. The laser for different skin tones page is worth reading too.

Hair growth from hormonal causes may return. See the laser hair removal and hormones page.

What should be considered when choosing?

The practitioner's training, a consultation, a test pulse and a skin type assessment are better guides than the device name. Results and number of sessions vary between people.

The number of sessions and the interval depend on the area and the hair cycle. No method can fix the result in advance. Eye protection and proper aftercare are also needed.

Pregnancy, tan, photosensitising medicines and skin diseases should be mentioned at consultation. The laser hair removal and laser safety pages cover the general rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ice laser and ordinary laser hair removal?

The difference is mostly the cooling system. The effect on the hair depends on wavelength and device type, not on cooling.

Does ice laser avoid pain completely?

It may reduce discomfort but not equally in everyone. Area and settings affect the sensation.

Does ice laser work on white hair?

Because laser targets melanin, results on white and very light hair are limited. Cooling does not change that.

How many sessions are needed?

It varies with area, hair structure and device. The doctor gives a general range at consultation, but results differ between people.

Is ice laser done in summer?

It is planned carefully because of tan and sun exposure risk. The laser in summer page explains the details.
