After a Liquid Facelift:
Swelling, Bruising, Massage Rules and the First Weeks

After a liquid facelift, mild swelling, bruising and tenderness are common and usually ease within days.

Intense exercise, sauna and alcohol are avoided in the first days, and massage or pressure on the area is done only on the doctor’s instruction. With biostimulators the result settles gradually. The treating doctor gives detailed instructions; warning signs need prompt contact.

What should you expect after a liquid facelift?

Mild swelling, redness, needle marks, tenderness and bruising are common in the treated areas. They usually ease over days. Swelling can make the face look temporarily fuller; the real result is judged once this temporary effect passes.

Bruising can appear where a needle or cannula meets small vessels, may change colour and usually fades within a few days to two weeks. Swelling can be most noticeable in the first 24 to 72 hours, and being more puffy in the morning is normal. When you can wear make-up and return to daily life depends on the extent of treatment and the doctor’s advice.

In the first days a slight asymmetry may be felt, which often comes from swelling not being even. However, if marked asymmetry, firmness or a palpable lump persists after the swelling has gone, tell the doctor and attend a review. Do not press on or work at the area yourself.

What should be avoided in the first days?

Intense exercise, sauna, steam rooms, alcohol and excessive heat are usually avoided for the first 24 to 48 hours, along with pressure on the area and sleeping face down. The exact list varies with the product and area; take instructions specific to you from the doctor.

Heat and intense exercise increase blood flow and can increase swelling and bruising. Alcohol can widen vessels in a similar way. Leaning on one side of the face or sleeping face down can put unneeded pressure on the area; sleeping on your back with the head slightly raised in the first nights can help swelling settle. Wait for the doctor’s advice on the timing of make-up and products.

Aspirin and similar blood-thinning medicines and some herbal supplements can increase bruising. Do not stop a regular medicine on your own; discuss it with the doctor who prescribes it. Tell the doctor beforehand about plans such as flights, strong sun exposure and dental work, so that timing can be set sensibly.

Why is massage restricted, and when is it allowed?

After biostimulators and some fillers, you are usually asked not to massage the area yourself; if massage is needed, the doctor gives the timing and the method. Instructions vary with the product, so follow the doctor’s plan.

In some biostimulator plans, massage of a certain duration and pattern may be advised to support the spread of the product; with some products, on the contrary, pressure and massage on the area are not wanted. There is therefore no general rule. The doctor explains whether massage should be done and, if so, how, according to the product used. It is important not to do it by yourself.

Treatments that apply pressure or heat to the area, such as facials, face massage and aesthetic device sessions, need to be planned with the doctor’s permission. Usually these are avoided for a few weeks after treatment; the period varies with the product and area.

When does the result settle, and is a review needed?

With hyaluronic acid based treatments the result is seen within days once swelling has gone. With biostimulators the effect is gradual, and it can take weeks, sometimes months, to settle. The review time depends on the product, and whether an additional session is needed is assessed there.

Fullness seen in the first days is sometimes due to a temporary fluid effect; after it eases the face may look flatter, and this is a normal stage. Because the collagen response with biostimulators takes time, the look of the result gradually becomes clearer. It helps to wait for the review rather than judge the result early.

At the review, the state of the face, symmetry and your satisfaction are assessed, and an additional treatment is planned if needed. If a new health issue, medicine or planned procedure arises in the meantime, let the doctor know. How long the effect lasts and when maintenance is due are covered on a separate page.

When should you contact the doctor without waiting?

Contact the treating doctor without waiting if there is whitening of the skin, a net-like purplish discolouration, increasingly severe pain, fever, spreading redness and warmth or discharge. With a vision change, difficulty breathing or drooping on one side of the face, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Serious complications are rare after fillers and biostimulators but can occur. Vascular occlusion needs assessment without losing time, and waiting at home for it to improve is not right. Signs of infection and delayed reactions should also be assessed by a doctor. In these situations do not try to manage things yourself or take medicines on your own.

It is important to know how to reach the clinic and whom to contact in an emergency after treatment. Keeping a record of the product name, amount and date helps if you need to attend another health facility. Warning signs are covered in detail on a separate page.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does swelling last after a liquid facelift?

Mild swelling eases within a few days in most people and can last up to a week in some. It varies with the product, the area and the person. If swelling keeps increasing or pain accompanies it, contact the doctor.

How long does bruising take to clear?

Bruising usually changes colour and fades within a few days to two weeks. Blood thinners and some supplements can increase bruising. If whitening or increasing pain accompanies the bruise, contact the doctor.

When can I exercise after a liquid facelift?

Intense exercise is usually avoided for the first 24 to 48 hours, while a gentle walk is often fine. The exact time varies with the product and area, and the treating doctor gives instructions specific to you.

Can I massage my face after a liquid facelift?

It is advised not to massage on your own. In some treatments the doctor may advise a particular massage, while in others pressure on the area is not wanted. Instructions vary with the product; follow the doctor’s plan.

When will I see the final result?

Once swelling has gone, hyaluronic acid treatments show their result within days, and biostimulators settle gradually over weeks and sometimes months. Waiting for the review rather than judging early is more useful.

When should I go to the emergency department?

With a vision change, difficulty breathing or sudden drooping on one side of the face, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department. With whitening, a net-like discolouration or increasing pain, contact the treating doctor without waiting.
