Safety · Activities after treatment

When can you exercise, fly, use a sauna, go in the sun or wear makeup after Botox or filler?

There is no single rule for activities after treatment; timing varies with the treatment and the person.

Many people are advised to avoid intense exercise, sauna and steam rooms for the first 24 to 48 hours, and direct sun for the first days. Makeup usually follows once needle marks have closed, and flying is planned with the doctor's approval. The treating doctor sets the exact timing.

Intense exercise
Usually paused for 24 to 48 hours
Sauna and steam room
Postponed for the first days
Makeup
Often next day or with the doctor's approval
Flying
Planned with the doctor by treatment and person

When can you return to exercise after treatment?

After most injections it is advised to pause intense exercise for the first 24 to 48 hours. Light walking is usually fine, but timing varies with the treatment and the doctor gives their own advice.

Intense exercise raises blood flow and body temperature, which can make swelling and bruising more noticeable at fresh injection sites. Weightlifting, running, heavy cardio and head-down positions are therefore postponed for a while. After Botox, avoiding pressure on the area and head-down positions in the first hours is a common recommendation.

Timing may differ after device and skin-quality treatments. See our before and after care page and the relevant treatment pages for details. If you train heavily, mention it at the consultation so the timing can be arranged around it.

How long to wait for sauna, steam room and hot environments?

Because heat widens blood vessels and can increase swelling and bruising, sauna, steam room and very hot showers are usually postponed for the first days. After filler and device treatments the wait may be somewhat longer.

Hot environments dilate vessels and may increase fluid collection at the injection site. Hyaluronic acid fillers need time to settle, and exposing the area to excess heat in the first days may prolong bruising. A lukewarm shower is usually fine, but avoid rubbing the face or directing hot water at it.

Facial massage, facial devices and peels can also act mechanically on the treated area, so they are postponed for as long as the doctor specifies.

When are sun, tanning beds and makeup allowed?

Avoid direct sun and tanning beds in the first days, then use sun protection regularly. Makeup can often begin once needle entry points have closed, usually the next day, though timing varies with the treatment.

A fresh injection area is sensitive to sun and heat. Sunlight, especially with bruising or skin irritation, may favour lasting colour changes, so broad-spectrum sunscreen and staying in the shade are advised. We discuss sun protection and home care on a separate page.

The safest approach for makeup is to wait for entry points to close, use clean brushes and sponges, and apply without pressing on the area. After devices or peels the wait may be longer. If your doctor gave a specific product or timing, follow it.

What should you know about flying and travel?

Whether flying is suitable depends on the treatment, the degree of swelling and bruising, and the person. There is no general ban, but planning travel with the doctor and leaving time for a check is sensible.

Cabin pressure and long periods without moving may make swelling at the site more noticeable. Short flights are not a problem for most people; still, if filler was placed in a bruise-prone area, talk to the doctor before travelling. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and keeping the head raised where possible may add comfort.

Planning matters especially for international patients, which we cover on our international patients page. Having treatment well before an event or trip leaves room for the unexpected.

When should you tell the doctor?

With worsening pain, skin blanching or a net-like colour change, fever, marked redness and warmth, or vision changes, tell the treating doctor immediately and go to emergency care if needed.

The general framework the doctor describes for activities can be reassuring, but every body heals differently. Swelling, pain or redness that lasts longer than expected or increases may need assessment beyond an activity restriction.

Our warning signs page lists which findings need care without waiting. When in doubt, contacting the doctor is always safer than waiting.
