What is anti-aging, and which steps genuinely work?

Anti-aging is a general name for approaches that aim to slow and manage the signs of ageing; stopping ageing is not possible. The steps with the strongest evidence are plain and unexciting: sun protection, a retinoid, avoiding smoking and good sleep. Many expensive or new-looking products have less evidence than these basics.

Core step
Regular sun protection
Supported ingredients
Retinoids, vitamin C, moisturiser
Lifestyle
Smoking, heavy sun exposure and poor sleep can age skin faster
Procedures
Planned by a physician according to need

What does anti-aging really mean?

It means slowing and managing age-related changes in the skin, not reversing ageing. Medicine today offers no method that stops ageing.

Skin ageing has two sources: natural changes over time and external factors such as sun, smoking and pollution. Because external factors can be managed, a good part of the visible signs can be influenced.

Phrases such as stop ageing in marketing have no scientific meaning. The goal should be skin that looks and feels healthier.

Which steps are supported by evidence?

The most evidence exists for sunscreen and retinoids; vitamin C and moisturiser are supporting steps.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen used daily is the most important way to prevent photoageing. Retinoids support collagen production and may help fine lines, but they can irritate and are not used in pregnancy.

Stopping smoking, a balanced diet, enough sleep and avoiding excess alcohol also affect the skin. That they are talked about less than procedures does not make them less important.

How should marketing claims be viewed?

A new ingredient name, dramatic before and after images or a promise of big change in a short time are signals to be careful.

Whether a product works often comes down to whether there are enough independent, controlled studies in people. Laboratory results or manufacturer data alone are not enough.

A high price does not show effectiveness. Simple products with known ingredients are often enough.

What does a simple plan by age look like?

In the twenties, sun protection and basic care; in the thirties a retinoid and vitamin C may be added; later, procedures are discussed according to need.

After thirty, peels, mesotherapy or microneedling may be considered for fine lines and texture. From forty onward, a device, collagen stimulator or filler may be considered for firmness and volume loss.

This is a general example, not a rule. A personal plan is set after a face-to-face examination.

Are procedures necessary for anti-aging?

No, they are not required. Procedures can make some goals easier to reach but do not replace basic care and sun protection.

When a procedure is suggested, it is appropriate to ask about its purpose, alternatives, risks and expected limits. You have the right to decline procedures that are not needed or that you feel rushed into.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection and certain medicines can prevent some treatments. Give your physician clear information.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important anti-aging step?

Daily sun protection has the most evidence.

Do collagen supplements work?

The data are mixed; there is not strong and consistent enough evidence for a benefit to skin.

At what age should I start a retinoid?

There is no set age; a physician or dermatologist guides according to need and skin tolerance.

Which products should be avoided in pregnancy?

Some products, retinoids above all, are not suitable; ask your physician.

Is skincare enough without procedures?

For mild signs it may be enough; for marked sagging or volume loss it is limited.
