Why does skin age and what influences it?

Skin ageing combines two processes: an intrinsic one over time (genetics, hormones, declining collagen and elastin) and extrinsic factors, above all sunlight, smoking and pollution. Sun exposure is among the most important external causes. The process cannot be stopped, but sun protection and healthy habits may slow it. The doctor assesses the suitable approach at consultation.

Intrinsic cause
Genetics, hormones, natural collagen decline
Extrinsic cause
Sun, smoking, pollution
Simplest step
Regular sun protection
Process
Can be slowed, not stopped

What changes as skin ages?

Collagen and elastin fibres decrease, cell renewal slows and fat and volume shift; skin thins, may dry out and wrinkles become more visible.

Collagen in the dermis declines gradually over the years, and hormonal phases such as menopause can make this more marked. Over the same period, fat under the skin and bone structure change. Volume loss and sagging in the face are not only surface problems but also reflect deeper structures.

For this reason no one product or procedure answers every aspect of ageing. Lines, pigmentation, texture and volume are different mechanisms, and each may need a different approach.

How do sun and lifestyle affect ageing?

Ultraviolet light damages collagen and speeds the formation of spots and wrinkles. Smoking also harms skin blood flow and tissue quality.

This process, known as photoageing, explains a large share of visible ageing on the face. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat and shade are therefore the most basic steps. Tanning beds are not recommended because of skin damage and skin cancer risk.

The effect of sleep, diet and stress on skin differs between people, and big claims should be avoided here. Habits that support general health are also considered reasonable for skin.

Which care and procedures target signs of ageing?

Sun protection, retinoids and antioxidants belong to home care; peels, mesotherapy, botulinum toxin, fillers and device treatments are doctor-led options.

There is limited but real evidence for ingredients such as retinoids and vitamin C, covered in their own guides. Procedure-based options address different goals, such as expression lines, volume loss or skin quality.

Which method suits you is assessed at consultation according to age, skin type, expectations and health history. No outcome can be promised and effects are temporary.

Can ageing be prevented?

No, but its pace can be influenced by sun protection and regular care. Marketing promises such as stopping ageing deserve caution.

Change with age is natural, and the goal should be a care plan that suits your own face and looks natural. The anti-ageing guide and the preventive botulinum toxin page give more detail on preventive approaches.

Frequently asked questions

At what age does skin ageing begin?

Collagen decline starts slowly from the mid-twenties. Visible signs vary between people and with sun exposure.

What is the most important external cause of ageing?

Sunlight is generally regarded as the main external factor, which is why regular sun protection is the basic step.

Can collagen be increased with a cream?

The collagen molecule is too large to be absorbed through skin. Some ingredients such as retinoids are reported to support collagen synthesis, but the effect is limited.

When is care needed at a young age?

Sun protection and a simple routine make sense at any age. Whether a procedure is needed is decided at medical consultation.
